Two event highlights in one day: Traditional Flimserstein cattle drive and "SRF bi de Lüt – Live" from Laax

Laax, August 31, 2023. The traditional Flimserstein cattle drive will take place for the 18th time on Saturday, September 16, 2023. Around 200 cows and calves with artistically decorated headdresses will return to the valley via the famous Scala Mola on this day. The arrival of the animals will be celebrated with Buura Z'Morga, a barn fair, market stalls, and live music. On the same evening, another event highlight will take place in Laax at the rocksresort with "SRF bi de Lüt – Live." Swiss Radio and Television's largest open-air entertainment show is coming to Graubünden and will provide a celebration under the open sky.

After another beautiful Alpine summer at over 2,000 meters above sea level, the cattle return to the valley. Around 200 colorfully decorated cows and calves will be ceremoniously led down from Flimserstein to Bargis in the valley on Saturday, September 16, 2023. They will be accompanied by almost 60 Alpine farmers. Guests and locals gather in the high valley of Bargis to watch the spectacle. In the evening, there is plenty of choice: in addition to the popular Stallchilbi festival in Scheia, there is also a big celebration in Laax. The rocksresort is hosting the TV show "SRF bi de Lüt – Live."

The highlight of the cattle drive is the old Roman road.

When the cows set off up the Scala Mola, the old Roman road leading down 500 meters to the Bargi Valley, all eyes are turned upwards. Built in 1645, the Scala Mola mountain path was carved into the rocks of the Flimserstein and still runs almost exactly along its original route today. "It's always a rustic feeling when you hear the bells from afar and see the decorated cows and the proud Alpine farmers on the Scala Mola," says André Gisler, tourism director of Flims Laax Falera. The Scala Mola is closed between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on this day due to the cattle drive.

Experience the spectacle up close

The return of the animals and thus the end of the alpine summer is celebrated. Delicious Buura Z’Morga breakfasts at the Attenhofer family or at the Berghaus Bargis invite you to linger. Between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., buses run every half hour from Flims Dorf, Post to Bargis. Festivities begin in Bargis at 10:00 a.m., with risotto, salsiz, cheese, and other farm specialties leaving nothing to be desired. At around 12:30 p.m., the cows are expected to arrive in Bargis and will then be led from Bargis to Fidaz and Flims village at around 2:00 p.m. In Fidaz, there will be an Älplerchilbi (alpine festival) from 11:00 a.m., and in Scheia at the Lerchihof, there will be a Stallchilbi (barn festival) in the afternoon from 3:00 p.m. Live music with "Servus aus Tirol," Buura Z'Nacht (farmer's dinner), and bar service round off the Flimserstein cattle drive at the Stallchilbi in Scheia.
