Laax, March 3, 2023 – The Suddenrush Banked Slalom LAAX will take place for the eighth time in 2023. Looking at the hustle and bustle in the finish area, it seems to be a much longer-standing tradition. Former world champions, alpine and boardercross legends from the 1990s meet Olympians, current slopestyle and freeride stars, and weekend shredders. They are often the fastest. They all have one thing in common: a passion for snowboarding. And that should be well waxed and well under control for the 17 steep turns that have been carved into the terrain on the course near Crap Sogn Gion. Riding along is great, but mastering the course the fastest is even better.
One person who has managed to do this regularly, and again today in his category of oldest participants, is Peter Bauer: "The course is well designed and simple, but it leaves a lot of room for the wrong line. There has never been as much discussion among us 'oldies' and super ambitious riders as there is today. How do you ride? Do you ride high or low?" Supermaster winner Bauer revealed his special recipe: "Frontside very low, backside very high."
The fastest of the day with 46-second times were the Grand Masters. Pascal Imhof curved ahead of Ueli Kestenholz to his umpteenth victory, Josh Dirksen and Sina Candrian successfully defended their professional titles, and Moritz Thönen and Celia Petrig were relegated to second place.
Her thighs were burning at the end, "but hey, it's fun!" said the LAAX freerider happily after her first banked contest. There were also newcomers in the women's masters category. How was Fabienne Wick's first banked slalom? "Awesome. The kids said, 'Mom, you can't brake.'" She followed their advice and had a great time. "I'll be back again next year!" Just like her kids on Sunday. First up on Saturday are the 18-39-year-olds, followed by the Fastest Race, where the best of all adult categories compete in a single run to determine the King & Queen. Will today's best time by PI hold? If you want to watch, just head from Crap Sogn Gion towards Beginner Park to Ils Plauns.
