Japanese double victory at the halfpipe finals of the LAAX OPEN 2023

Ruka Hirano and Onu Mitsuki are the LAAX OPEN Halfpipe 2023 champions. Thanks to their performances in Thursday's semi-finals, the two Japanese freestylers secured their first titles in LAAX at the FIS Snowboard World Cup.

Scotty James (2nd/AUS) and Yuto Totsuka (3rd/JPN) took second and third place in the men's competition, while Shaotong Wu (2nd/CHN) and Maddie Mastro (3rd/USA) took second and third place in the women's competition. The best Europeans were Olympic silver medalist Queralt Castellet (4th/SPA) and Germany's Andre Höflich (6th), who finished ahead of local rider Jan Scherrer (7th/SUI).

In consultation with the riders, the FIS canceled the eagerly awaited night final. Wind and fog prevented normal conditions. World Cup leader and LAAX fan Scotty James said: "Snowboarding is a winter sport. That's what I chose: the cold, the wind, the snow, and everything that goes with it."

On Sunday, January 22, 2023, the slopestyle finals in snowboarding and freeskiing will mark the end of the LAAX OPEN 2023. The action starts at 9:30 a.m. at Crap Sogn Gion.
