Laax, March 4, 2023 – The most popular category is traditionally the Open Riders. Ordered and delivered for them: a bright blue sky at Crap Sogn Gion, surrounded by a 360° mountain panorama. The 100 snowboarders were told not to let this distract them, but to focus on the start of the 8th SuddenRush Banked Slalom LAAX. The dance through the 17 curves had it all: from elegant to daring, courageous to chill, ambitious to risky. Carla Somaini and last year's winner Renato Nadig were the fastest to master the course.
SuddenRush Banked Slalom LAAX expert and Open starter Svenja Schallner, who finishes on the podium year after year (2023: 2nd Open Women, 3rd Fastest Race), is also enthusiastic this year: "It's mega fun, mega cool people, a great atmosphere, and mega enjoyable! The fascination of banked slalom? For me, it's the centrifugal force that pulls you up and allows you to generate speed out of every turn."
At the end, the best-placed riders in all age and skill categories get another chance to compete in the "Fastest Race" to determine the fastest female and male riders. A run that has to be perfect. Turn after turn, like an endless loop, psychedelic, exhilarating, from top to bottom, from bottom to top, for spectators and riders alike. Every minute, they whiz through the light barrier to the finish line, cheered on by their competitors. A glance at the time display – in vain. It has been switched off to keep the suspense going. Only the award ceremony in the valley reveals what had already been rumored: Ueli Kestenholz, alpine star of the turn of the millennium, beats current Halfpipe World Cup rider Dave Hablützel by 11 hundredths and LAAX local Renato Nadig by 16 hundredths to win. In the ladies' competition, Irene Marolf takes the crown as the fastest woman.
