8-seater gondola Crap Masegn – Fuorcla – Vorab

The Crap Masegn – Fuorcla – Vorab mountain railway is now history. The six-seater gondola lift built by Habegger went into operation in 1978. On Sunday, March 30, 2025, it had its last day of operation, and the iconic white and red gondolas had served their purpose. In the summer of 2025, the cable car system was modernized as part of a retrofit. A new eight-seater gondola lift was built with the same route. Most of the stations and supports remained in place. The new system went into operation on December 19, 2025.

timeline

December 2025

Reopening of the new railway

The Crap Masegn – Fuorcla – Vorab gondola lift will reopen on December 19, 2025. From then on, 86 cabins, each with a capacity of 8 people, will transport 1,500 to 2,000 people per hour.

November 2025

Commissioning & Preparation

Commissioning & preparation for acceptance: System tests, adjustment runs, safety/functionality checks—everything prepared so that the system can be presented to and accepted by the Federal Office of Transport (FOT).

Fall 2025

Commissioning and system integration

The rope work and construction of the stations have been completed. The facility is currently undergoing final completion work and commissioning. The operating license is expected in early December 2025.

The technical commissioning phase will begin in the fall. New components will be installed, interfaces tested, and the section integrated into the overall system. Safety checks and system tests will take place in the weeks leading up to the 2025/26 winter season to ensure a smooth start.

Summer 2025

Construction work at all stations

Concrete work will begin at the Vorab and Masegn stations in May 2025. At the same time, Garaventa will start technical preparations for the new railway. On June 18, 2025, the support heads will be dismantled by helicopter. The supports themselves will remain in place and will be reinforced where necessary and adapted to the new route. During the summer months, the focus will be on the foundations, station construction, and preparation of the building services.

March 2025

End of operation and start of dismantling

The gondola lift will cease operation at the end of March 2025. Dismantling of the old facility began in April. The Fuorcla station will be dismantled in stages, leaving only the existing platform roof. Work is also beginning at the Masegn and Vorab stations to make room for the new structures.

Winter 2024/25

Last ride

The Crap Masegn – Fuorcla – Vorab gondola lift is about to enter its final season. Alongside ongoing guest operations, initial preparatory measures are being taken for the upcoming dismantling. These include logistical clarifications, material inventories, and initial technical preparations on the existing infrastructure, particularly at the Fuorcla station.

Reuse of large parts: Stations and supports remain largely intact (resource conservation/reuse).

During the renovation of the line, around 80% of the steel structure was retained, which helps to conserve resources. Primarily, only the support heads were replaced instead of rebuilding the entire supports. At the Vorab and Masegn stations, around 80% of the existing concrete was reused. Reinforcing concrete foundations were only rebuilt where necessary for the new structure.

Fuorcla station was built as a timber-framed structure with a dark metal shell.
