Successful first winter at the Freeride Base in Nagens

In December 2017, the Freeride Base in Nagens opened its doors for the first time at 2,121 meters above sea level. During the 2017/18 winter season, guests were able to treat themselves to good coffee, hot chocolate, and delicious "Ruclas" power balls while warming up in the cozy premises. The winter was cold and there was plenty of snow – a perfect start for the Freeride Base. It is set to become the new center for all freeriders in the LAAX ski area. But of course, all other guests are also very welcome.

Inside the Freeride Base, you quickly realize that it's not just a place to refuel for a strenuous day of skiing, but also a treasure trove of information about freeriding and everything that goes with it. For example, there are five different avalanche transceivers on the wall, ready to try out and view on site, which can also be purchased directly.

There are also other products that are essential for every freerider, such as an avalanche probe, avalanche shovel, and a good backpack. For those who feel the cold, there are also gloves to buy, for example, or new ski goggles for optimal visibility. In addition to the latest products, there is also helpful information on the current avalanche situation, various maps and books, as well as information boards on different types of avalanches and the procedures to follow in the event of a rescue. Those who study the boards carefully and seek help or further expert knowledge from the trained Freeride Base Team (led by the SOS Team and Stefan Bühlmann, a prospective mountain guide) will definitely improve their knowledge and thus minimize the risk of endangering themselves in the terrain.

You can also get information about the ATC center in Plaun directly at the Freeride Base. A course on how to react correctly in an emergency situation is recommended for everyone. A visit to the Freeride Base is definitely worthwhile.

And if you're lucky, you might even meet Lio, the avalanche dog, who always enjoys being petted by visitors.
